The best people to help teenagers who are depressed are the parents, even though this is a very difficult task for them. Below are some tips which will help you to be able to recognize the symptoms of teenage depression and know what to do.
It is natural for teenagers to suffer from moods, but not when these start to affect their daily lives. Chronic anxiety is a different thing from moodiness. It is not normal to panic over small problems. Teenagers may not communicate well with parents at this stage and therefore don't tell them about their fears. This problem can lead to depression.
It is the parents who can help their teens through this time of change. It is better to support them through this than to cope with the pain of helping them recover their mental health.
Teenagers feel lots of pressure: parental pressure to do well at school, pressure of multiple activities, from school and so on. They also frequently don't perform up to their own or others' expectations and this leads to low self esteem.
Teenagers therefore need to be reassured that success takes time and practice, and it's OK to fall short of expectations, because it's all part of learning.
It will help to build up your teens' self esteem if you show them respect and appreciation. Allow them to develop at their own pace and don't place expectations on them which are too high. This includes family responsibilities.
Discuss relevant issues with your child, such as career choice, choices with regard to smoking, sex or drugs, friendship issues, peer pressure and so on. Clear boundaries are also important.
Ensure that you are available to discuss issues with your child even if you are tired. Do not intrude on their personal space, but be there if they need you. It is also important that you set good examples for your teens when it comes to matters such as dealing with stress and managing your own life. Allow your teen to feel free to discuss feelings with you, and listen patiently. Often all it takes to defeat depression is to have someone listen as you tell them about your emotions. As they talk be sure not to make fun of them or be aggressive towards them.
Teenagers suffering depression are often withdrawn, showing signs of sadness and shyness. Some, however, react to depression by displaying difficult behavior at school and at home, or their school grades or attendance may drop.
Other emotional signs of the depressed teen are showing hatred or anger towards their family. Sometimes they feel that nobody cares or understands, and this makes them want to withdraw from other people. It is important, therefore, that you show them that you are concerned and that you love them.
Self destructive behavior is also typical of depressed teenagers, who may talk about death and suicide. Parents need to take these signs seriously and seek help right away. Do not be afraid to discuss these notions of self harm with your child. Avoid sarcasm and criticism when you discuss issues with your teen, who may see these as signs of rejection.
Other symptoms of teenage depression include feeling worthless, difficulty becoming involved in fun activities, carelessness with regard to daily routine tasks, excessive worrying, difficulty concentrating and making decisions.
In order to treat the depression you need to know the cause. Watch what is happening and see what happens that could be the cause and which you can fix by yourself. Most causes of depression can be corrected within the family, before there is need for a psychiatrist.
The next step is psychotherapy or cognitive behavior therapy, and this can be quite daunting. Relaxation and meditation can also help. Teenagers may be happy confiding in a mentor or life coach. In severe cases anti-depressants may be necessary.

Symptoms & Treatment of Teenage Depression
Coping With Stress at Work
No matter what situation you work in, or what type of work you do, there will usually be things which from time to time cause you to feel stress. Frequently employees in the workplace will end up having one or two days away from work, as a result of stress build up. For some, their time off may even be longer than that. The key to this is how people manage stress.
Some situations at work may cause you more stress than others; for example some people feel stress because of limitations on their time, whereas others feel stress because of the people they have to deal with at work. Many things are affected by how you handle stress at work, including your relationships with co-workers, your work performance, and even the state of your health.
Nobody can completely avoid stress, and this is an important point you must understand if you want to be able to cope with stress. If you are constantly trying to avoid stress, then your health and work performance are still going to suffer. The next thing that's important for you to understand is that your stress symptoms are not cause directly by the work pressures, but by the way you look at them and how you manage them.
Businesses are now becoming more aware of the huge effect which stress can have on their employees and their business, and as a result many have stress reduction measures in place. Some examples of these include employment benefits such as massage and gym membership, or 'mental health' release days.
A lot of businesses which employ people in jobs that are known to be high stress also employ counselors, who help their employees to cope with their stress at work as well as stress they may be suffering in their personal lives.
We are all affected differently by stress, which means that one person's symptoms of stress will differ from another's. Therefore it's important that you know what your stress symptoms are, as this will help you to cope with them. Amongst the more usual stress symptoms are stomach problems, allergies, sleep problems, back pain and headaches.
Habits such as biting your nails can also develop as a result from stress. If symptoms of stress are not dealt with they can often lead to the development of more serious issues, including life threatening ones such as heart disease and high blood pressure. Serious psychological problems can also result, including difficulty controlling your anger, and depression.
Stress at work does not, however, have to be a bad thing all of the time, and in fact some kinds of stress can improve your work performance and feelings of self worth. For example, if you have been allocated a particularly challenging task because your boss considers you the best person for it, then you will be likely to enjoy the challenge. You will probably then rise to it, even though you might have to put in some extra work.
So, prepare yourself for inevitable stress at work, by knowing how to deal with those times before you get to them. Physical activity is a good way of coping with stress, because stress causes a build up of toxins, which can be released by exercise.
You should also talk to someone about the things that are causing stress at work. It is important to share problems, and this may also help to work out solutions. Deep breathing can also help during times of stress.

Why is Physical Fitness so Important? (Besides For Great Sex)
There are at least 2 great reasons for making fitness a priority. First, it improves the quality of your life. Second, it improves the quantity of your life. If we can convincingly argue that fitness actually achieves these goals, it seems obvious it should be a priority. Many articles and magazines discuss how physical activity can minimize health risks and describe other benefits of physical fitness. However, knowing exercise is good may not be enough for us to make the time we need.
Fitness can mean different things. In order to enumerate the benefits we need to be specific about the definition. Fitness is often defined to include strength, endurance, flexibility, and aerobic ability. Each of these has somewhat different effects on quality and quantity of life.
Strength
Besides making you strong, strength training can build and maintain bones, muscles, and joints. Strength exercises create muscle mass and that muscle mass pulls more calories making it easier for you to lose weight. Strength also makes it possible to participate in activities that are not possible otherwise especially performing physical tasks that require lifting (Football, basketball, picking up and swinging your children/grandchildren
). Another advantage of strength training for women is that it helps prevent osteoporosis. More choices mean more opportunities for enjoying your life.
Endurance
Endurance allows you to participate in activities for an extended period of time. How about enjoying a walk along the beach or kicking a ball back and forth with your children or grandchildren. No one wants to worry about the long walk across the parking lot at the shopping mall during the holiday season. Like strength, endurance also extends your opportunities for enjoying your life.
Flexibility
Flexibility allows you to move your body comfortably within the normal range of movement. Without flexibility, many common activities become uncomfortable and un-enjoyable. Reasonable flexibility is required for, pulling a sweater over your head, washing your hair, wrestling with children, and tying your shoes. Pulling on a pair of pants requires flexibility. Without flexibility, many of the everyday tasks we take for granted become arduous.
Aerobic fitness
Obviously, your heart and lungs are vital to both the quality of your life and the quantity. Heart attack is a leading killer in North America. Also, it is difficult to enjoy your life if walking up the stairs is a major ordeal. Everything about life is better if you are not constantly fighting for a good breath of air. It is well documented how exercise helps prevent heart attacks. It is also well documented how exercise helps with respiratory problems and obesity. Without a healthy heart and strong lungs, you are expected to have less life, not to mention less quality of life.
I think that most people would have no problem agreeing that all the components of fitness described here are important. The problem is whether they are important enough to do something about. At every moment of every day we all have competing priorities. "Do I walk to the corner store to get a paper in order to get a little exercise, or do I drive so that I can get back and help Junior with his homework?" Everyone one has to deal with the fire of the moment which stops us from achieving our longer term goals, but we should not have to decide between our children and exercise. The point here is that we need to remember that fitness is fundamental to our happiness and we need to integrate it into our lives. All this is intended to answer the question: "Why is physical fitness so important?"

Antioxidants, How They Can Help You!
Antioxidants are molecules of nutrients in food that prevent oxidation from damaging the human body. Oxygen is used by the human body which produces a by-product that causes damage. The antioxidants act in a way to repair the damage done by the by-products. Some of the damages done by oxidative damage are diabetes, macular degeneration, heart disease and cancer. Some of the most commonly known antioxidants are vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and caroteniods.
Antioxidants are very helpful to human health. Some research states that foods that contain antioxidants can actually delay many of the age related diseases. Continual research is always being done about the knowledge of antioxidants. Antioxidants neutralize the by-products of the body. By products can be created not only by oxygen but other factors as well. Radiation and tobacco smoke are two things that cause by products. After a long period of time the damage that is done by the by products can not be reversed this can create cancer. But the antioxidants come in and prevent the by products from taking from other molecules which might help to prevent against cancer.
Another thing that also creates more by products in the body is over exercising. It puts more oxygen into the body and the oxygen creates by product. This concerns some people because it might worsen the damage to muscles. Since it is not possible to measure the amount of by products that are in the body there is not way to tell if a dangerous amount is in the body and if extra antioxidants are going to need to be taken. The damages from exercising occur over time. Regular exercise can increase the antioxidant defenses and protect against the by products create by exercise.
There are a lot of foods that have antioxidants, fruits, vegetables, grains, even some meats have them. Leafy green vegetables have Lutein and carotene. Carotene is also found in things like sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, pumpkins and mangos. Carotene is usually found in foods that are orange in color.
Lycopene is found in such foods as tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya, and guava. Most people get there intake of lycopene from tomatoes and tomato products. The mineral selenium isn't antioxidants but have the same component. It is found in such foods as rice, meats, and bread. Brazil nuts have a high amount of selenium in them too
The vitamins A, C and E are also great in getting antioxidants. Foods that have a lot of vitamin A are liver, milk, egg yolks, carrots, mozzarella cheese and sweet potatoes. Cereals, beef, poultry, and fish are really high in vitamin C. So are many fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is found in safflower, corn and soybean oils, wheat germ, and almonds. You can also find it in mangos, broccoli, and nuts.
A study has been done on antioxidants to see if they help to reduce the toxic effects of lead. The base of the research was that the main cause of lead being toxic is the oxidative stress. An imbalance was created between the by-products and the antioxidants in the body. This caused an excessive amount of by product in the body and resulted in destroying the tissues. Common symptoms of lead poisoning are anemia, irritability, headaches, weight loss, and motor impairment. Most lead poisoning is caused by eating foods with lead in them and by contact with an environment that has lead in it. The testing done to prove that antioxidants will reduce the toxins from lead was proven to be effective.

Why a Detox Foot Spa is the Way to Go?
Overworked, overextended and several pounds heavier? If post-holiday blues and a frantic back-to-work routine is weighing you down, why don't you step back a moment, listen to your body as it shouts for a little time to relax and re-balance itself. Treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa therapy and other detox delights. While sipping a cool, refreshing fruit drink, you may have a detox foot spa, for instance.
Being attuned to your body is, indeed, the first step to better health and wellness. So many of us suffer from toxic overload which can lead to over fatigue, a host of digestive problems, and a dangerously reduced immune function. The good thing is that when your body is having difficulty removing toxins, it lets you know in varied ways. These may include digestive problems; recurring colds & flu; headaches & migraines or joint pains; bad breath & body order; sensitivity to caffeine, alcohol or monosodium glutamate; lethargy & feeling drained; difficulty in concentrating at work; allergies & other skin breakouts; and constant irritability, to name some. When one or most of these occur, the first thing to do, of course, is to consult a primary care physician. A detox foot spa may be a thoroughly relaxing thing which is even touted to be an effective way to ease many ills ranging from eczema to asthma and menstrual problems to other ailments.
For body cells to function correctly, though, there are other things one can do in conjunction with detoxifying spa therapy, to deliver vital nutrients to the body, which in turn results in the elimination of unwanted toxins. You can re-balance your cells, first and foremost, by removing food additives and overly processed foods from your diet. Opt instead for the top five detox foods: leafy green vegetables (like spinach); fresh vegetable & fruit juices; lemon (which can prevent infection and is good for the liver and digestive system); seaweed (rich in minerals); and apples & grapes (with antioxidant properties linked to reduced risks of heart attack and cancer). You may also supplement smartly when these detox foods are not yet in your pantry.
While you're at it, pamper yourself with a personal spa treatment using a homemade body scrub. An example is the avocado moisture scrub, easily created by mixing two fresh avocado pits ground to a powder with a cup of milk or yogurt. The alpha hydroxyl acids in the yogurt or milk serve as natural defoliators that can stimulate cell turnover while moisturizing skin. Or you may use lavender essential oil place a few drops in a basin of very hot water and dip in a terry washcloth then rub skin briskly, starting with your feet and up to the upper extremities.
The body scrub may follow a detox foot spa that will allow you to relax for about half an hour. While placing your feet into the foot bath or basin-like container filled with water and some minerals or herbs, you can think happy thoughts to ease your mind of worries. Clear your mind of pressing work concerns.
A good quality multifunction foot spa can be found in online stores. Check out reputable foot spa device manufacturers and find one that can possibly help expel accumulated toxins and wastes, including aged cells. Some sites indicate that various types of toxins will be indicated by a color different that indicates a person's health status, but this has been met with mixed reactions ranging from plain curiosity to incredulity.

Massage Can Really Alleviate Stress
Whoever you are and whatever you do, it's likely that at least some stress affects you in your day to day life. You may not be crippled by its effects and it may not consume your thoughts during every waking moment, but if you leave the house for any reason at all during the day it's very likely that you experience some form of stress. It may come from getting stuck in a traffic jam, from dealing with unruly customers at work or from tension in personal or workplace relationships, if you are living life at all ; stress is there.
The effects of stress can start out just lasting the duration of the stressful situation that you are in ; a traffic jam causing you to run late for work may make you a bit jittery and on edge, but once you are at work and realize that everything is okay, the feelings will begin to subside. The more exposed you are to stressful situations, the longer your body may react to the stress ; it can manifest into headaches, nausea, depression or any other number of things for hours after you've exited whatever situation was causing you stress. If you are put into stressful situations often enough without the appropriate relief, your body will constantly show and feel the effects of the stress.
Many people today don't know how to properly deal with the stress that they face on a day to day basis ; they let it fester inside until it manifests into headaches, hypertension, high blood pressure, or something worse or they deal with it in some of the unhealthiest ways, like through violent outbursts, binge eating or binge drinking.
Not dealing with stress at all or not dealing with it in an appropriate fashion can lead to more and greater problems. Stress is a serious problem and you can't expect a problem to heal by not addressing it or by trying to treat it through unhealthy consumption.
Get rid of your Stress in a Healthy Manner
One of the best and healthiest ways to deal with and remedy all of your stress and its associated problems is through massage. There are dozens of different massage styles and each can do wonders for melting away the aches and pains associated with stress. Shiatsu, therapeutic, hot stone and acupressure will all help to work out the kinks so commonly associated with high levels of stress ; some people respond better to one type or another and some just favor the techniques used in certain types of massage. The best way to figure out which type of massage will work best for you is to try them out ; you should be able to tell shortly into your appointment how well the massage is working to relieve your stress and tension.
Licensed massage practitioners are highly trained and spend sometimes upwards of two hundreds hours or more training to perfect their craft before the can actually obtain their license. They are required to put in both a predetermined number of hours for book learning in which they study the body and its mechanics, and a predetermined number of "contact" hours in which they are actually performing massage under the watchful eye of an experienced instructor, in order to truly perfect the craft.
This intense training gives the massage therapist the ability to identify and treat individual problem areas all over the body. You don't even necessarily need to be on a regular schedule of receiving professional massages to yield the benefits, but going once every six weeks or two months can do wonders to your overall health. Whatever knots and kinks may have built up due to the stress you've been experiencing since your last visit will be able to be identified and worked out by a properly trained massage therapist.

Healthy Weight-loss Tips
Do you live to eat, or do you eat to live?
Too many calories will make you overweight
and shorten your life. Retain more calories than you burn off each day and you will gain weight. Burn off more calories than you take in each day and you will lose weight. That sounds short and sweet, doesn't it? But what you eat and how much you exercise and sleep, have a major impact, not just on your weight, but most importantly, on your health!
As I approach what to share with you in this article, I want you to know that recently I've completed reading two of the best books on nutrition that I've ever seen. The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Eat To Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. Both reveal simple facts that you may not be aware of. These facts could show you how to achieve vast improvements in your health and weight. Not very hard things to do, but they do take knowledge and willingness to make changes.
The China Study gives findings from the most comprehensive large study ever undertaken, about the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease. Researchers were provided the rare opportunity to study the dietary effect of a mostly plant-based diet. There are major nutritional differences in the Chinese and American diets. Here's a comparison of the nutrients consumed in China and the United States.
Nutrient: China, United States
Calories per day 2641, 1989
Total fat (% of calories) 14.5, 34-38
Dietary fiber (g/day) 33, 12
Total protein (g/day) 64, 91
Animal protein (% of calories) 0.8,10-11
Total iron (mg/day) 34, 18
As you can see, there are huge differences between the Chinese and American diets. The Chinese have a higher overall calorie intake, less fat, more fiber, less protein, much less animal foods, and much more iron.
So, what different results do we see in the health of the Chinese and American peoples? Here are a few facts that may be surprising. In China the blood cholesterol level generally ranges from 90 to 170. In the USA, it is 170-290. As animal protein intake goes up, LDL ("bad") cholesterol goes up. As plant protein intake goes up, LDL ("bad") cholesterol goes down.
Regarding cancer, here's a quote from Dr. Campbell , "nutrients from animal-based foods increased tumor development while nutrients from plant-based foods decreased tumor development." Overall, cancer is less common in China than in the U.S.
I have pointed out only a couple instances in this article concerning the relationship of diet to health. It's definitely worth noting that both "bad" cholesterol and cancer rates are more common in the U.S. than in China. As the China study progressed it became quite clear that people who consumed diets high in animal protein had more heart disease, cancer, and other diseases than those who consumed diets high in plant protein.
So, you may ask, "What does all this have to do with losing weight?" I'm sure you've heard of the "food pyramid." In Eat To Live, Dr. Fuhrman recommends a different food pyramid. In it at the top of the pyramid, where the foods are listed that you should "rarely" consume are beef, sweets, cheese, milk, processed food and hydrogenated oil. Poultry, eggs, and oils are allowed only once weekly or less. Fish and fat-free dairy foods can be eaten twice weekly or less. Whole grains, raw nuts and seeds should be 5-20% of calories. Fruits should be 20-50% of calories. Beans/legumes should be 10-30% of calories. Vegetables, eaten half raw, half cooked should be 30-70% of calories. The food pyramid described above is part of the plan for substantial weight reduction. The reader might note that it certainly has a similarity to what Dr. Campbell discovered while doing The China study as being best for health, too!
Some of the tips that Dr. Fuhrman lists for losing weight, and keeping it off include
1. Remember, the salad is the main dish: eat it first at lunch and dinner.
2. Eat as much fruit as you want, but at least four fresh fruits daily.
3. Variety is the spice of life, particularly when it comes to greens. You can include the following: lettuce (including Romaine, bib, Boston, red leaf, green ice, celery, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, peppers, onions, radishes, carrots, beets, cabbage, all kinds of sprouts, etc.
4. Beware of the starchy vegetable. Limit cooked high-starched grains and vegetables to one cup a day. For the most part, consider vegetables that are not green to be a high-starch vegetable. Exceptions would be eggplant, peppers, onions and mushrooms.
5. Eat beans or legumes everyday.
6. Eliminate animal and dairy products.
7. Have a tablespoon of ground flaxseed everyday.
8. Consume nuts and seeds in limited amounts, not more than one ounce per day.
So far we have touched only on what you should and should not eat to be healthy and to achieve or maintain your optimum weight. It is extremely important to your health and optimum weight to get regular exercise, adequate sleep and you might want to consider including a good multi-vitamin mineral supplement, too.
Depending on your interests and physical ability there are many ways to exercise your way to better health. To list a few: walking, swimming, bicycling, jogging, running, playing sports, weight training. Choose one or more ways to get exercise that will be aerobic , build strength and burn calories. This will not only help your metabolism, but will actually help you gain energy and lose weight.
Last, but certainly not least, is the importance of getting enough rest and sleep. No matter how healthy a diet you are on, and how much exercise you get, if you are not getting adequate sleep, it will be harmful to your health.

Electro Acupuncture Machines Come of Age
In an age when numerous lifestyle-associated diseases associated with unhealthy diets, constant stress and lack of exercise leading to a variety of illnesses & complications threaten to impede quality of life and longevity, many people are turning to non-traditional forms of treatment. When diagnosed with serious illnesses, people tend to harbor the alarming thought that chronic disease may persist, impair or cut life short, driving them to turn to alternative medicine for relief or as supplementary treatment.
One of the most popular forms of alternative treatment is acupuncture, a healing art dating back 3,000 years ago. Many people in presence society turn to acupuncture to address concerns like wrinkles, obesity, some bothersome conditions like abdominal pain, or other lifestyle-related diseases that threaten to take people before their time, not to mention complications of serious ailments. The belief which holds much water is that life energy flows through the physical body along distinct pathways termed meridians. Along these meridians are numerous acupuncture points. When stimulated by needles that are inserted in the body, they act as generators of life energy. This is how patients obtain relief for their bodily woes. The alternative to sticking needles into the skin is a method that more and more people are embracing electro acupuncture. Developed in China sometime in 1934 as an offshoot of manual acupuncture using needles, it melds ancient techniques with modern science.
In contrast to manual acupuncture, what a qualified practitioner does in lieu of needle insertion is to stick electrodes to the skin surface. In some instances, a handheld probe is used. Carefully measured electrical stimulation is applied through these contraptions, which will then stimulate acupoints in the body. Most patients who undergo several acupuncture sessions say they feel much better. It's a natural way of dealing with illnesses and addressing health complaints.
As a therapeutic approach for stubborn disorders, regular treatments using electro acupuncture may be quite effective, but as with other forms of medicine, expert advice and proper usage is still needed. Extra caution has also been raised for people with special conditions like heart disease.
Aside from the patients themselves, acupuncture practitioners derive may benefits from using such modern devices for their current practice. Applying electro acupuncture generally takes a few minutes, freeing up time for the practitioner to attend to a few other important tasks. The electrical device may also offer a stronger dose of stimulation (depending on the illness cases) without possible tissue damage that may be created by traditional needle manipulation. There is greater control over frequency and amount of stimulus that must be administered vis-à-vis manual acupuncture. The downside is that the doctor or qualified practitioner administering the treatment ends up not directly taking part in the entire treatment process and not observing all changes occurring in the patient. Nonetheless, high-tech equipment available in the market nowadays come with superior tracking devices and offer instant documentation and graphical analysis. There are quality selections at special prices that may even be obtained from online merchants.

Split Peas Are an Excellent Source of Nutrition
While most of us are familiar with split pea soup, there is a lot behind those little peas. Did you know that dried peas have been a staple of the human diet since prehistoric times? Peas have been found in archeological digs in Egypt, Asia, and Rome. Peas also played an important role in the genetic studies of Gregor Mendel in the 19th century. History aside, those little dried peas carry a lot of punch.
Split Peas are Chock Full of Fiber and Goodness
Are you worried about your cholesterol level? Eat split peas! Full of soluble fiber, peas help to bind up cholesterol-containing bile and move it out of your body. This can help with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulosis. A single cup of cooked dried peas in your daily diet provides 65.1% of the recommended daily fiber. They also provide a good amount of protein, two B-vitamins, and several important minerals. Peas also include isoflavones, which are helpful in reducing the risk of breast and prostate cancer.
If you are diabetic, or have it in your family, split peas can be your best friend. Peas help stabilize your blood sugar levels while providing a steady supply of energy. Studies have shown that type 2 diabetics who eat at least 50 grams of fiber per day can lower their cholesterol, their triglycerides, and the VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoprotein) by a considerable amount.
Peas can also reduce the amount of plaque in your blood vessels and help your heart remain healthy. If you are sensitive to sulfites, which are added to most deli foods and salad bars, the mineral molybdenum will help you detoxify them. Peas can provide you with almost twice the recommended daily allowance of this mineral from a single 1-cup serving. Signs of sulfite sensitivity may include rapid heartbeat, headache, or disorientation.
How to Enjoy Your Split Peas
Split peas come in two varieties: green and yellow. Both can be used for most recipes interchangeably. The most common way Americans eat split peas is split pea soup. This can be made with left over ham or pork, or kept vegetarian. Either way you get a thick, tasty bowl of goodness. Many people are a bit stymied after this... what else can you do with them?
Split pea dip can be made with herbs, a little olive oil, red wine vinegar, garlic, a few chopped olives, and some cilantro. It can be enjoyed with pita bread, just like hummus. A pilaf can be made combining split peas with brown rice and seasonings that could be a wonderful change of pace as a side dish. Indian cuisine uses a lot of yellow split peas, which they call daal. They are added to their soups, or used to make fava, which is a puree served with fish, salty foods, or dark leafy greens. They also add split peas to buckwheat or quinoa dishes. With added spices, these dishes can be mild or spicy, whichever you prefer.
As you can see split peas are as good for you as any food, you could choose. Not only are they the makings of many a tasty dish but with their added health benefits you will not feel guilty for having a little more of them.

Are You an Optimist or a Pessimist?
"I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else." - Winston Churchill
When you notice your thoughts, which kind of thoughts predominate? Do you find yourself often thinking pessimistic thoughts such as:
* I'll never get where I want to go. I'm a loser.
* I'm not smart enough to achieve what I want to achieve.
* God is there for others but not for me.
* I'm going to end up losing what I have.
* The world is very unsafe so I have to always be vigilant.
* Why reach out to others? No one really likes me.
* Why put forth effort? There is no point since I don't have the talent or ability to success.
* Some people just have good luck, but I don't.
* Things are going too well. I just know that something bad is going to happen.
* Life is too much for me to handle.
* I'm going to end up alone.
* Life for me will always be a disaster.
* There is no point in eating well or exercising - my genetics are against me.
* I'm not emotionally or physically healthy, and this is just the way it is. There is nothing I can do about it.
* I don't deserve to be happy.
* I don't deserve to be loved.
And so on...
Or, do you find yourself often thinking optimistic thoughts such as:
* If I work hard enough and stay focused, I will get where I want to go.
* My intelligence and abilities increase with learning.
* No one ever succeeds without a lot of effort, and I can put in as much effort as anyone who has ever succeeded.
* If I stay tuned into and trust my own inner knowing, I can feel safe.
* I am a good and kind person so of course people like me.
* It is not luck that causes people to succeed, but belief in themselves.
* When bad things happen, these are opportunities for learning and growth.
* Life's challenges present me with incredible learning opportunities.
* When I am ready for partnership, someone will show up.
* Regardless of how physically or emotionally unhealthy my parents were, I can make choices that result in physical and emotional health.
* Everyone deserves to be happy, including me.
* Everyone deserves to be loved, and everyone is loved by God.
YOU GET TO CHOOSE!
